Hot Composting

This method of composting is the most popular and familiar method of composting. Managing a compost pile consists of mixing the right ratio of nitrogen material (green) with the carbon material, (brown) adding water and mixing it so there is good air circulation to encourage the aerobic microorganisms to start breaking down the materials into compost.

A smelly compost pile is caused by not having the proper ratio between nitrogen and carbon materials and lacks adequate air circulation. This mismanagement encourages anaerobic microorganisms to produce the offending odors we associate with full and unattended garbage cans.

A proper managed compost pile can be ready to add to your garden in about 4 to 5 months.  Aggressively managed piles can be ready sooner.  It all depends on your time and materials used.
